ASP Web Forms
ASP.Net is Microsoft's web application framework and the successor to Microsoft’s “classic” ASP . Equivalent in a lot of ways to third party PHP frameworks such as CodeIgniter and Zend but the difference here is that Microsoft designs and develops the framework and provides the majority of the tools, such as Visual Studio, to allow developers to use it. Thus this makes the ASP.Net environment much more proprietary, although Microsoft is taking slow steady steps to embrace open source.
Geek Fact
Scott Guthie coded the first prototypes during the Christmas holidays in 1997. It was initially named XSP as opposed to ASP. It was called this because a number of other cool technologies at the time started with an X, such XML and XSLT.
