HTML5
HTML is the standard upon which all websites are built, it’s the language browsers such as Internet Explorer and Chrome understand and read in order to display websites to you. HTML5 is the latest revision of this standard and includes a range of cool new features which are designed to directly replace the need for JavaScript and Flash ActionScript in a number of cases.
We recommend using HTML5 whenever you require some trick functionality to be available on a wide range of browsers both on your PC and mobile. Frustratingly Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 9 is still behind the curve and does not fully support HTML5 yet. However Chrome, FireFox and Safari all do support HTML5 and Internet Explorer will catch up with time.
HTML5 is designed with complex web applications in mind. In particular it offers support for the display of video, audio and canvas elements. If you didn’t already know - a canvas element allows dynamic, scriptable rendering of 2D shapes and bitmap images.
Geek Fact
Steve Jobs of Apple made the bold statement when releasing the iPad back in April 2010 that Adobe Flash is no longer necessary to watch video or consume any kind of web content. This kicked off one of the largest debates about Flash in recent history, made more significant by the fact that the iPad does not provide support for Flash. Therefore HTML5 is often used as a replacement.
What it's good for
Cleaner Markup
Plus the additional semantics of new elements such as head and time.
Reduced need for images
Increases your web page loading time.
Improved graphics
The new canvas element opens a wealth of opportunities for JavaScript to draw graphics, diagrams, animations and graphs.
